Anyone who has followed the series since the days of Altaïr knows that Assassin’s Creed has always liked taking the player on a stroll through history. On May 13, 2021, Ubisoft released Wrath of the Druids, the first major story expansion for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, and put out the trailer to mark the date.
The expansion came out for Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and PC, and was part of the game’s season pass. This time, Eivor crosses the sea to Ireland after receiving a letter from cousin Bárid mac Ímair, king of Dublin, who asks for help sealing an alliance with Flann Sinna, about to be crowned High King of Ireland. The plot soon runs into the Children of Danu, a cult of druids who want to drive both the Norse and the Christian faith off the island.
According to Ubisoft, the new region came with new enemies, a trade system, a ship with customization options and new armors and cosmetic items to unlock. Another detail that pleased those who preferred the historical side: the expansion’s campaign stays focused on Eivor, with no segments in the present or with the Isu, the ancient civilization that usually ties together the series’ mythology.
Valhalla had reached stores on November 10, 2020, alongside the launch of Xbox Series X|S, as the first Assassin’s Creed of the new console generation. Wrath of the Druids was the first of several post-launch content drops for the game.
What came next
The season pass then brought The Siege of Paris, which takes Eivor to France, and Ubisoft also released for free, in October 2021, the educational mode Discovery Tour: Viking Age, which removes combat and lets the player stroll through medieval England and Norway in tours guided by historians. On PC, Valhalla stopped being exclusive to the Epic Games Store and came to Steam on December 6, 2022.
