Sony buys Returnal studio Housemarque, and a leaked image on Twitter suggests Bluepoint was also acquired

Sony announced the acquisition of the studio behind the recent Returnal. Housemarque has worked with Sony for a good while and is responsible for games such as Resogun, Matterfall, Dead Nation and others. The acquisition is part of the company’s new policy of investing in studios that make sense for the brand. On the acquisition, Hermen Hulst, head of PlayStation Studios, said:

“Housemarque’s recent launch of Returnal proves that the studio has an incredible vision, capable of creating memorable new games that resonate with our community. This addition boosts the creative strength of PlayStation Studios, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for Housemarque.”

The co-founder of Housemarque was also enthusiastic about the acquisition:

“We are very excited to finally join the PlayStation Studios family! This gives our studio a clear future and a stable opportunity to keep delivering gameplay-centered approaches, while still experimenting with new methods of narrative delivery and pushing the boundaries of this modern art form. Locally here in Helsinki, it also means we will officially expand the PlayStation family into a growing industry hub and secure the legacy of Finland’s oldest game studio.

On the rumor side, a tweet from the official Playstation Japan account ended up posting an image welcoming Bluepoint to the Playstation family (image below). Bluepoint is known for remasters and remakes of various games, such as the Uncharted series (The Nathan Drake Collection), Shadow of the Colossus, Titanfall (Xbox 360 version) and the recent Demon’s Souls remake.
