In a week busy with Sony announcements, today we got the reveal of the “Director’s Cut” of the hit Ghost of Tsushima.
I’ll leave the text posted by the PS Blog with all the news further below, along with the link to the post, but first I want to talk about another important part of the announcement.
Sony will not make this upgrade free, whether for the PS4 or the PS5 version, but it will give several options to those who want to upgrade the original game to the Director’s Cut:
- If you already own the original PS4 version, you will soon be able to pre-order an upgrade to the Director’s Cut. (On the US PSN it will be $19.99, so we will probably pay R$ 100,00 on the Brazilian PSN)
- Once you own the PS4 Director’s Cut, you can upgrade to the PS5 version for another $9.99 (we should pay about 50 reais)
- If you want to go straight from the original PS4 version to the PS5 Director’s Cut, it will cost $29.99 (R$ 150,00)
The native PlayStation 5 version will have dynamic 4K resolution aiming to hold 60fps at the same time. It will also use the DualSense’s haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, plus 3D Audio improvements. Lip sync for the characters with Japanese audio will also be included, and according to Sucker Punch this was one of the things fans of the game asked for most.
On top of all that, as part of the rumors of recent days pointed out, we will get a brand-new island called Ikishima, with a new story for Jin Sakai, bringing new missions, environments, enemies and other novelties. This expansion will be available in both versions of the Director’s Cut: PS4 and PS5.

What a year! We are approaching the first anniversary of Ghost of Tsushima and we are very grateful for all the love we have received since launch. It is great to see how Jin’s story resonated with all of you, and we feel very fortunate to have such dedicated and welcoming fans.
We have thought a lot about how to expand Jin’s story, and we also spent the last year going through all your feedback on how we could improve the experience of playing Ghost of Tsushima. We have worked hard to create a new edition of the game that not only includes a new chapter in Jin’s journey, but also brings some updates that are a direct response to some of the community’s most requested features.
We are pleased to announce that on August 20 we will release Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut for PS5 and PS4 consoles. This new edition includes not only the original game and all the additional content we have sold so far, but also a new adventure for Jin and a bunch of new features that we can’t wait to reveal.
Iki Island
If you are a history fan, you may know that Iki Island, a neighbor of Tsushima, was also invaded during that same period. We are delighted to reveal today that an entire new chapter of Jin’s journey is coming and that the story will take place on Iki. In this new adventure, Jin travels to the island to investigate rumors of a Mongol presence there. But he soon finds himself caught up in events that raise deeply personal questions and will force him to relive traumatic moments from his past.
We will have more to share about Iki’s story soon, but today we can confirm that, in addition to an entirely new story and new characters, the new island also features a lot of new content, including environments to explore, armor for Jin and his horse, minigames, techniques, enemy types and much more. There are even new animals to pet!
On both platforms, the Director’s Cut will also offer new Trophies, which will be unlocked with the new Iki content.
PS5-exclusive features
Anyone playing the Director’s Cut, on either PS4 or PS5, will be able to experience the Iki Island content, but people using the PlayStation 5 will have access to some additional features.
We heard your feedback about the lack of lip sync with the Japanese dub in the original Ghost of Tsushima, and we worked hard to fix that in this new release. Thanks to the PS5‘s ability to render scenes in real time, the cutscenes in Ghost of Tsushima and on Iki Island on PS5 now have lip sync with the Japanese dub.
We are also happy to confirm that Ghost of Tsushima, Ghost of Tsushima: Legends and the new Iki Island expansion will benefit from haptic feedback and adaptive triggers in the Director’s Cut. There will also be 3D audio* improvements for PS5, as well as drastically improved loading times, 4K resolution options** and frame rates with the potential to reach 60 FPS.
Progress transfer
If you already own Ghost of Tsushima for PS4, you will be able to transfer your progress to PS5 and continue where you left off. For those starting to play, the new Iki Island content will be available from Act 2 of Ghost of Tsushima, after you reach the Toyotama region.
Other updates
Besides the Director’s Cut, those who already own Ghost of Tsushima will be able to download an update containing some new features. Once again, many of these updates came about thanks to the constant stream of suggestions and feedback you have given us since launch, for which we are immensely grateful.
All players will receive an update with new accessibility options for controller remapping, as well as the option to enable aim lock during combat. And for those of you who tweet at us all the time asking for the option to hide the quiver during play: yes, we will add that feature too!
Finally, fans of Ghost of Tsushima: Legends will also get new updates, including a mode full of new things that we can’t wait to explain in detail in the coming weeks. All Ghost of Tsushima: Legends*** updates will be available for free to anyone who owns any version of Ghost of Tsushima, regardless of platform.
Pre-orders and upgrades
Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut will launch on August 20 for R$349.90 on PS5 and R$ 299.90 on PS4.
You will be able to pre-order the digital version on the PlayStation Store, or the physical versions at several stores. If you pre-order at participating stores, you will receive a digital mini soundtrack with tracks from the original Ghost of Tsushima, plus two new songs from Iki Island and a digital art book containing an artistic selection from Ghost of Tsushima plus 10 new images with concept art from Iki Island.
Pre-order on the PlayStation Store at any time before launch and get access to the PS4 version of Ghost of Tsushima for immediate download, so you can start experiencing the main game and transfer your progress to continue where you left off when the Director’s Cut launches in August.
Additional details about the upgrades will be available on the PlayStation Store closer to the release date.
Thank you again to everyone for making this such a special year. We can’t wait to share more about Iki Island soon!
