A Plague Tale: Innocence, originally released on May 14, 2019 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC, received a current-generation version on July 6, 2021: PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. A Nintendo Switch version, played via the cloud, launched the same day.

The new version brought faster loading, 4K resolution at 60 frames per second and 3D audio support. At first the game was only available in digital stores, but the official account announced that physical copies for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S would reach stores on October 19:

For those unfamiliar, the game from Asobo Studio, published by Focus Home Interactive, is a stealth action-adventure set in Aquitaine, France, in the mid-14th century, during the Hundred Years’ War. The player controls Amicia de Rune, who must protect her ailing younger brother, Hugo, while they flee Inquisition soldiers and hordes of rats spreading the Black Death. Instead of direct combat, the game asks for patience: hiding, distracting or knocking out guards with the few tools you have, running from the rats and solving puzzles along the way.

Innocence was well received by critics and passed one million units sold in July 2020. In June 2021, during Microsoft’s E3 conference, Asobo and Focus announced the sequel, A Plague Tale: Requiem, planned for 2022.

What came next

Requiem launched on October 18, 2022 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Switch via the cloud, again with Amicia and Hugo as protagonists, now in southern France, searching for a cure for the boy’s illness. The game was also well received and earned five nominations at The Game Awards 2022, including Game of the Year. In 2026 the series also got a prequel, Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy.
