Numbers first: almost 10 minutes of gameplay, one target, two possible approaches. At the July 8, 2021 State of Play, the presentation in which Sony shows its upcoming releases, Arkane Studios displayed a commented demo of Deathloop, with protagonist Colt hunting Aleksis Dorsey, one of the game’s targets, known as The Wolf.
Translating the premise: Colt is trapped in a time loop on the island of Blackreef, which repeats the same day endlessly. To escape, he must eliminate eight targets, the Visionaries, before midnight. If a single Visionary survives, the loop restarts and undoes what was done. Since it is impossible to kill them all separately in one day, the player must learn routines, gather clues from one loop to the next and manipulate events to bring several targets together in the same place.
In practice, the video showed the DNA of Dishonored, also from Arkane. You can advance through stealth or go for confrontation, and the abilities help in both cases. One of them lets you lift enemies and throw them far away, saving ammo. Another mechanic shown was Reprise, which lets Colt be revived twice in each area; on the third death, the loop restarts and he loses his equipment, unless he has made items permanent with the Residuum feature.
During the mission, Colt trades taunts over the radio with Julianna, a Visionary in charge of protecting the loop. She can also be controlled by another player, who invades the match to hunt Colt. If multiplayer is turned off, artificial intelligence takes over.
Deathloop was set for September 14, 2021, on PlayStation 5, as a timed exclusive among consoles, and PC.
