Hold on to this, Mega fans: Limited Run Games announced Earthion, a 16-bit 2D space shoot ‘em up made by Ancient Corporation, the studio of the legendary Yuzo Koshiro (Streets of Rage, ActRaiser). It is coming to PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch and, believe it or not, on a physical cartridge for the Mega Drive/Genesis.

The ride

You pilot Azusa Takahashi through eight arcade stages, with enemies and giant bosses everywhere. The game runs natively on the Mega Drive and squeezes the hardware, and Koshiro’s soundtrack has 27 new tracks. The team also includes Makoto Wada (Gotta Protectors) and art by Mitsuhiro Arita (Pokémon TCG, Marvel Comics).

  • Multiple difficulties and a challenge mode;
  • Adjustable scanlines to simulate a CRT;
  • Stage passwords and a music player;
  • Bonus development demos;
  • Online leaderboard (except on Mega Drive/Genesis).

Our take

Koshiro making music for the Mega Drive in 2025 is sacred arcade stuff, dude. If the gameplay matches the soundtrack, plenty of people will be pulling the old console out of the closet.
