Come with me, because today we have a goblin duo! A few days before the launch of Styx: Shards of Darkness, French studio Cyanide showed a trailer dedicated to the cooperative mode, and look how cute the idea is: you can call a friend into the match at any time, without restarting anything, and they can leave whenever they want.
In co-op, the second player controls one of Styx’s own clones. Together, the two jump, climb, hide and take out enemies, and the fun is in combining things: one creates the distraction while the other attacks, the two sync silent kills and share space around bigger enemies. Everything demands coordination, because one wrong step alerts the whole guard.
For those who just arrived: Styx is that sarcastic little goblin who became a protagonist in Styx: Master of Shadows, from 2014. Shards of Darkness is the direct sequel and the third game set in the Of Orcs and Men universe. It is published by Focus Home Interactive, the game runs on Unreal Engine 4 and the set date was March 14, 2017, on PC, PS4 and Xbox One. Stealth is the heart of it all: clones, invisibility, traps and a grappling hook to climb, with freedom to fight the guards or simply avoid them.
What came next
The game came out on March 14, as promised, and got an average of 72 on Metacritic on all platforms. IGN gave it a 7.8 and highlighted the challenge and the goblin’s sharp humor, and PC Gamer gave it a 79, praising how the mechanics fit together into a satisfying stealth experience. My little gamer heart was glad to learn that Styx didn’t stop there: the next adventure, Styx: Blades of Greed, arrived in 2026.
