Come with me for a stroll through Wraeclast: in May 2017, Grinding Gear Games published the video “A Preview of 3.0.0 Environments”, with a preview of the settings of The Fall of Oriath, the 3.0 update for Path of Exile. And the news was also for those who played on console, because this version would be the basis for the game’s debut on Xbox One.
The Fall of Oriath was the game’s biggest expansion up to then. It added six new acts to the campaign, which grew to ten, and changed how you progress through the story: before, the player repeated the same acts at ever higher difficulty levels; with the expansion, the campaign became a single, continuous journey. After traveling to the city of Oriath in act 5, the exile returns to Wraeclast in acts 6 to 10, revisiting familiar places and facing gods that awoke after the fight against the Beast in act 4. The Pantheon system, new unique items and new skill gems also arrived.
On Xbox One, Path of Exile still had no date, only confirmation that it would come out in 2017. The console version had been in development for over a year.
For those who didn’t know it yet, a cute little summary: Path of Exile is a free-to-play action RPG from New Zealand’s Grinding Gear Games, released on PC on October 23, 2013 and heavily inspired by Diablo II. The game’s economy doesn’t use gold, but currency items that players trade among themselves.
What came next
The expansion reached PC on August 4, 2017. Still in August, Path of Exile debuted on Xbox One already with The Fall of Oriath, free to download. The game went to PS4 in March 2019, won the BAFTA for Evolving Game in 2020, and the sequel, Path of Exile 2, entered early access on December 6, 2024.
