Come along, because this news is as colorful as the game: a US Amazon page revealed, in November 2018, that Sunset Overdrive was coming to PC on the 16th of that month. The official announcement hadn’t been made yet, but the listing already had a date and everything.
For those who don’t remember, Sunset Overdrive came out on October 28, 2014 as an Xbox One exclusive. It was created by Insomniac Games, the studio behind Ratchet & Clank, in a partnership with Microsoft Studios. It’s an open-world action game in a city overrun by mutants after an energy drink goes very, very wrong, and the charm is in the movement: you can grind on wires, bounce off cars and run along walls without ever stopping shooting. What a lovely chaos, honestly.
The PC version had a curious split: THQ Nordic would handle the physical retail edition, while Microsoft kept the rights to the digital version.
What came next
The date was confirmed, and Sunset Overdrive reached Windows on November 16, 2018. Critics liked it again: a score of 81 on Metacritic on Xbox One and 83 on PC, with praise for the visuals and movement, although some reviews found the story weak.
There is a less sweet chapter in this story. In August 2019, Sony bought Insomniac, and the brand’s rights stayed with the studio, not with Microsoft. Years later, documents leaked in a ransomware attack on Insomniac showed that the game cost $42.6 million, sold around 1.9 million units and gave the studio a profit of just $567. A shame for a game so full of personality, one my little gamer heart would still like to see get a sequel.
