Anyone who played the first Fallout games on 1990s computers has reason to remember December 2018. At The Game Awards, on December 6, Obsidian Entertainment revealed The Outer Worlds, a first-person sci-fi RPG directed by Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky, the duo who created the original Fallout. Soon after, Game Informer published about 15 minutes of commented gameplay on its channel.
The story has a curious detail. Obsidian, of Fallout: New Vegas and Pillars of Eternity, had just been bought by Microsoft, an announcement made at X018 on November 10, 2018. But The Outer Worlds had already been arranged with Private Division, Take-Two’s indie publishing label, before the acquisition. That is why the game was announced for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, with a release planned for 2019.
The video showed a classic-lineage RPG: a space colony in the hands of corporations, companions with their own personalities, lots of dialogue and choices that change the course of the adventure. Back in the video rental days, this would have been called a “computer RPG”, the kind with lots of text and decisions; here it arrived looking like a big game for consoles too.
Here is the 15-minute gameplay video:
What came next
The Outer Worlds came out on October 25, 2019 for PC, PS4 and Xbox One, and reached Switch on June 5, 2020. Critics praised the writing and characters; combat was singled out as the weak point. The game beat expectations and passed 4 million units sold by August 2021. Two expansions followed, Peril on Gorgon (September 2020) and Murder on Eridanos (March 2021), plus the Spacer’s Choice Edition remaster in March 2023. The sequel, The Outer Worlds 2, now published by Xbox Game Studios, came out on October 29, 2025.
