Here’s the thing: at The Game Awards on December 6, 2018, Nintendo revealed that Joker, the leader of the Phantom Thieves of Persona 5, would be the first fighter in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s extra pack. Persona 5 was, up to then, a PS3 and PS4 game, and the appearance immediately raised the question: was Atlus going to bring the RPG to the Switch?

The rumor of the moment came from user MysticDistance, picked up by NintendoSoup. In previous months, Atlus had reportedly registered several website domains, one of them supposedly for a Persona 5 version on Switch, with names like Persona 5 Reloaded or Persona 5 Ultimate. That version would bring extra content, along the lines of what Persona 4 Golden did on the PS Vita, and would be announced on the day Joker arrived in Smash.

For fans of the series, the theory made sense, but that was all it was: a theory. Atlus confirmed nothing, and a registered domain was never a guarantee of a released game. A rumor is a rumor, and we treat it as such.

What came next

The rumor did not pan out the way people expected. Joker arrived in Smash Ultimate in April 2019, as paid DLC. The expanded version of Persona 5 did exist, but it was called Persona 5 Royal and came first to PS4, on October 31, 2019, in Japan. Switch only got the game on October 21, 2022, with all of Royal’s paid content included for free.

It took a while, but it arrived. Anyone who waited since 2018 ended up with the most complete version of the game.
