Facts first: in December 2018, Remedy Entertainment and 505 Games released the World Trailer for Control, the new game from the Finnish studio behind Max Payne, Alan Wake and Quantum Break. The release was planned for 2019, on PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
The video’s focus was the setting. Narrated by James McCaffrey, the voice of Max Payne, the trailer introduced the Oldest House, the headquarters of the Federal Bureau of Control, a secret American government agency. From the outside it looks like an ordinary New York building; inside, it is a place full of supernatural phenomena, hidden from the public since the 1960s.
Control had been revealed at Sony’s E3 2018 conference, directed by Mikael Kasurinen and running on Remedy’s in-house engine, Northlight. According to the studio, it was a gameplay-driven experience in a sandbox style, in which the player would need to master a combination of supernatural powers and abilities to survive. In practice, this means more freedom to explore the Oldest House and combine powers in combat than in the studio’s more linear games.

What came next
Control came out on August 27, 2019 for PC, PS4 and Xbox One, with protagonist Jesse Faden, the shape-shifting Service Weapon and psychokinetic powers. Critics were positive, with Metacritic averages between 82 and 85. Two expansions followed, The Foundation and AWE, the latter tying the game to the Alan Wake universe, along with PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions in February 2021. By August 2021, more than 10 million people had played Control. In February 2024, Remedy took full ownership of the series, and the follow-up, Control Resonant, came out on September 24, 2026 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. A shape-shifting building fits a series that changed hands, by the way.
