The Xbox One, even before its launch, received a lot of criticism from the specialized press. The criticism mostly concerned the need to connect every 24 hours for a kind of online check and the impossibility of selling or buying used games.
The criticism was intense and led Microsoft to backtrack on its choices even before the console launched… even so, the damage was done (even today it is common to see people who know little about games thinking the Xbox One only works online). Phil Spencer took the leadership role of the Xbox division and was handed the difficult mission of winning back the lost audience, and since then he has managed to greatly improve the console’s situation. Recently, on a podcast, Phil promised to improve the offering of the company’s exclusives. Phil said:
“The capability we have now, as a first-party organization, I think will continue to grow, but what we have at the moment is very different from the position we have been in for the last five years, which is fantastic.”
“I’ve seen what Ninja Theory is working on and what its plans are… I’ve seen Playground’s next game, I’ve seen Rare’s next work and its continued growth and success with Sea of Thieves.”
“The real goal with these studios, for me, is to have a large number of studios with which we can delight and surprise people with games, and the fans as well, on a regular basis, so that we aren’t always thinking ‘okay, what can we announce?'”
“Now we can say ‘what do we have to announce and which of these things can we really announce and which ones do we want to hold back a little longer’. It has been a long time since we were in this position with our first-party studios.”
