Testing a game before release has a special flavor, and Ubisoft gave The Division 2 fans that chance. The closed beta of the new open-world shooter, headed to PC, PS4 and Xbox One, started on Thursday, February 7, 2019, at 11 a.m. Brasília time, and ended at the same time on Monday, February 11.

There were two ways in. Those who pre-ordered the game got access and could also invite three more friends; with a digital purchase, access was automatic, and in physical stores it came with a code. The other option was to sign up on the official site with a Uplay account, but signing up did not guarantee a spot. Watch the beta trailer:

The confirmed content included two main missions, one Invaded mission with three Specializations, which gave a preview of the endgame content, and the Dark Zone, the series’ player-versus-player area.

What stands out in this sequel is the change of setting. Out goes the snow-covered New York of the first game and in comes a Washington, D.C. in the middle of summer, with locations such as an abandoned zoo where survivors took refuge, the streets around the Capitol and the wreckage of Air Force One. The release was set for March 15, 2019.

What came next

After the closed beta, Ubisoft ran a four-day open beta starting March 1. The Division 2 launched on the announced date and received generally favorable reviews on Metacritic, with many critics seeing improvements over the first game, although the story was criticized. The game passed 10 million copies sold and got the Warlords of New York (2020) and Battle for Brooklyn (2025) expansions.

Indies and pixel art

Capitão Pixel swears he has a pilot’s license, but the only thing he really flies is the Steam Next Fest demo list. He covers indies, pixel art and art direction, and can write three paragraphs about a jump animation. He has never been seen without his captain’s cap, not even in photos (which, let’s be honest, are all drawn).
