Disney made heavy demands on Kingdom Hearts III

Disney made heavy demands of Square Enix on Kingdom Hearts III, which brings together characters from both universes. Here is what was revealed.

Kingdom Hearts is a Square Enix game where characters from several of the company’s franchises and from the Disney world meet. The game is famous for having worlds set entirely in Disney films, but we never learned what Disney’s requirements are for Square Enix to use its content.

Shedding some light on the matter, Kayoko Yajima, the game’s lead facial animator, talked a little about Disney’s approval process in an interview given to IGN US. Yajima said:

“There was really a lot of pressure to get even the smallest details, ones you wouldn’t think were that important, to look the way they do in the movie.

We got requests from Disney and Pixar that said, ‘we want you to show less teeth here’, or ‘the eyes need to move differently’, or ‘their line of sight isn’t really right’. Of course, it’s in the cutscenes that the characters’ soul is revealed, so it was something we put a lot of effort into and adjusted down to the tiniest detail.””

From what was said, Disney seems quite perfectionist and demanding about everything involving its characters, but even so, according to the game’s co-director Tai Yasue, it approved some “unexpected” changes to its characters quite easily, such as Simba being turned into a fire entity when summoned.

Yasue concludes by saying that Disney is much more demanding about the cutscenes, but that even the gameplay has to be approved by them.
