The facts: in March 2019, Remedy Entertainment confirmed to Game Informer magazine that Control would arrive in the Northern Hemisphere summer, meaning between June and September 2019. The exact date remained secret, but it was the first more precise window since the reveal, which until then had only said “2019”.
Control is a third-person action game with special powers, published by 505 Games for PS4, Xbox One and PC. Remedy is the Finnish studio behind Max Payne (the first two), Alan Wake and Quantum Break, and the new project kept the house signature: cinematic action, mystery and a good dose of strangeness. The protagonist is Jesse Faden, who arrives at the Federal Bureau of Control, a secret agency that studies supernatural phenomena, and must face a threat called the Hiss inside a shape-shifting building.
The project’s numbers: the game was revealed at E3 2018, runs on Remedy’s own engine, Northlight, and had a budget of about 30 million euros over three years of development. It is directed by Mikael Kasurinen, with Sam Lake as creative director and writer. In practice, the “summer” announcement was already good news, because Remedy tends to take a while to pin down dates.
What came next
Control came out on August 27, 2019, within the promised window. Critics praised the setting, the art direction and the gameplay; Metacritic scores range from 72 (Switch) to 87 (Xbox Series X|S). The game created the so-called Remedy Connected Universe, which links Control to Alan Wake. By August 2021, more than 10 million people had played, counting Game Pass, and by March 2026 sales had passed 6 million units. Later came the co-op game FBC: Firebreak, in June 2025, and the sequel Control Resonant, in 2026. Translating the jargon: summer 2019 was only the start of the workday at the Bureau.
