In May 2019, SNK published another trailer for the new Samurai Shodown, the series’ return after years of absence. This time, the video was dedicated to Charlotte, one of the franchise’s classic fighters. At the time, the launch was set for the end of June on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, with the PC and Switch versions planned for the end of 2019.

Charlotte is a French knight who fights with a rapier, striking with quick thrusts learned in cavalry training. In her official profile, SNK describes her as a warrior who values martial discipline above social rank, proud, sometimes arrogant, but always willing to protect her land. Among the curiosities in her profile: she likes red roses, can’t stand rats and has operatic singing as her special skill.

In the game, her style calls for reading distance. The rapier has good reach, and those who play Charlotte learn to control space and punish with precision the opponent who approaches carelessly. She is the kind of character that fits well with Samurai Shodown’s rhythm, in which a few well-placed hits decide the round and patience is worth more than haste.

What came next

Samurai Shodown arrived on PS4 and Xbox One on 25 June 2019, with 16 characters in the starting roster and Charlotte among them. It was SNK’s first game made on Unreal Engine 4. Stadia got the version in November 2019, the Switch on 25 February 2020 in the West, the PC on 11 June 2020 and Steam only on 14 June 2021. The game also got an Xbox Series X|S version in March 2021.

Over three content seasons, guest fighters arrived, such as Warden, Gongsun Li and Baiken, from Guilty Gear. Metacritic scores ranged from 75 to 81, depending on the platform, and the game was nominated for Best Fighting Game at The Game Awards 2019.
