Come along, because the wait ended in May 2019. The next Ghost Recon had already had some details leaked, but Ubisoft had not confirmed anything yet. On May 9, the company finally announced Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint and showed the game in a video of about 13 minutes of gameplay, with release set for October 4, 2019 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.

The story is set in 2025, on Auroa, a fictional island. The player takes the role of Lieutenant Colonel Nomad Perryman, of the Ghosts. And look who the villain is: Cole D. Walker, a former member of the Ghosts, played by actor Jon Bernthal, who leads a rogue paramilitary unit called the Wolves. Having a familiar face from film and TV as the antagonist was one of the highlights of the announcement.

In gameplay, the idea was to mix the series’ tactical shooting with open-world survival. The player manages resources, injuries and fatigue and can choose between acting quietly or going for direct confrontation. You can play alone or in a group of up to four people in co-op, which is always the most fun way to tackle this kind of mission.

What came next

Breakpoint arrived on the planned date, October 4, 2019, and got a Stadia version on December 18. Reception was mixed: critics found the missions repetitive and the set of ideas not very cohesive. Three weeks after launch, Ubisoft’s CEO admitted that sales had disappointed.

The team kept listening to players. In 2020 came AI-controlled teammates, a long-standing fan request, and an Immersive Mode that allowed turning off the gear level system. Support with new content ended on April 5, 2022, shortly after Ubisoft put NFT-format items in the game. A path full of ups and downs, but with the team’s care for community requests.
