Heads up: on the eve of the debut, September 30, 2019, Respawn Entertainment dropped the gameplay trailer for Meltdown, the third season of Apex Legends. The season started the next day, October 1, on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

New map, new legend

The biggest change was the map. Respawn’s free battle royale left behind Kings Canyon, the map everyone had known since launch, and took the legends to the planet Talos, to the new World’s Edge, a setting where, in Respawn’s own words, “molten heat and chemical ice collide”. Fire and ice in the same place, and in the middle of it all a moving train that became one of the map’s landmarks. For those who like planning drop rotations, it was a new thing to memorize.

The trailer also showed the Charge Rifle, the season’s brand-new weapon, and the new playable character, Crypto, whose real name is Park Tae Joon. He appeared with the default look and with an alternate skin, probably part of the battle pass. Each season’s passes are time-limited and grant cosmetic items to those who complete challenges in the game.

Apex Legends had debuted in February 2019 and arrived in style: it passed 25 million players in its first week and 50 million in its first month. The seasons, which began on March 19 that year, are Respawn’s way of keeping the game alive, with map changes and gameplay novelties in each phase.

What came next

Apex stayed strong in the live-service model: it came to Nintendo Switch in 2021, to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S in 2022 and to Switch 2 in 2025, always with cross-platform play. In April 2021, the game already totaled around 100 million players.
