Some games present themselves better when you watch someone play, and Immortals Fenyx Rising was one of them. At the end of October 2020, a little over a month before launch, Ubisoft Quebec’s adventure showed up in two new videos: the first boss fight, shown by Game Informer, and the character creation system, shown by IGN.
The comparison many people made at the time was a Zelda flirting with Assassin’s Creed, and it’s easy to see why. The game takes place on the Golden Isle, an open world with seven regions inspired by Greek mythology, all accessible from the start. Fenyx climbs cliffs, rides and flies with Daedalus’ wings, always accompanied by the bird Phosphor, who points out interesting places on the map. In combat, there are light, fast sword attacks, heavy axe attacks, bow and arrow and divine powers, such as the Fúria de Ares, which sends enemies flying with spears. Minotaurs and cyclopes are among the enemies.
What stands out in the second video is the freedom in appearance: the player chooses Fenyx’s gender, voice and look, and later, in the Salão dos Deuses, can use Aphrodite’s Cadeira da Beleza to change everything again whenever they want.
A nice production detail: the story is narrated by Prometheus to Zeus, and the humor of the bickering between the two was inspired by films like The Princess Bride and Airplane!. The soundtrack is by Gareth Coker, composer of Ori, recorded with ancient Greek instruments such as the lyre and the cithara. The project was born from a bug in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey that turned the crew into giant cyclopes, and it was announced at E3 2019 as Gods and Monsters.
What came next
Immortals Fenyx Rising was released on December 3, 2020 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and Stadia, with “generally favorable” reviews on Metacritic. The game was praised for its narrative, humor and open world, but criticized for its similarity to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Three DLCs followed, starting with A New God in January 2021.
