Come with me, this news has a hat, a whip and a whiff of adventure. On January 12, 2021, Bethesda announced that MachineGames, the Swedish studio behind the modern Wolfenstein series, was making a new Indiana Jones game, with an original story, not based on any of the films. The project would have Todd Howard, director at Bethesda Game Studios, as executive producer, and would be made in partnership with the newly created Lucasfilm Games.
The announcement came with a short teaser:
Check out how cute the video’s details are: a desk with the hero’s belongings, books about ancient monuments (one of them signed by Todd Howard), a college mug, a worn diary, a compass, a plane ticket to Rome and a passport stamped by Bethesda. The company warned: “It will be some time before we have more to reveal.”
MachineGames became known for Wolfenstein: The New Order, The Old Blood and Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus. At the time, it belonged to Bethesda and ZeniMax Media, which were in the process of being bought by Microsoft. So everyone wanted to know whether the game would be Xbox-exclusive, but the platforms were not revealed.
What came next
Microsoft completed the ZeniMax purchase on March 9, 2021. The game became Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, set in 1937, between Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Last Crusade, with Troy Baker as Indy. The original contract with Disney provided for a multiplatform game, but it was changed after the purchase. It came out on December 9, 2024 for PC and Xbox Series X|S, as a timed exclusive, reached PlayStation 5 in April 2025 and Nintendo Switch 2 on May 12, 2026. What a journey, huh?
