Come with me, this news tugged at my little gamer heart: in early February 2021, BioWare confirmed that Mass Effect Legendary Edition would arrive on May 14 for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, with compatibility on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The collection had been announced on November 7, 2020, N7 Day, the date the studio uses every year to celebrate the series.
For those who don’t know it yet, Mass Effect is an action RPG trilogy in which you play Commander Shepard, who can be male or female and have an appearance, background and name chosen by you. The great charm lies in the choices: decisions made in dialogue have consequences that follow the player from one game to the next, in the spirit of tabletop RPGs. The mission is to unite the galaxy against the Reapers, a very advanced machine race.
The package brings together Mass Effect (2007), Mass Effect 2 (2010) and Mass Effect 3 (2012), with almost all the single-player content released as DLC. All three got updated textures, shaders, models and effects, higher resolution and more frames per second, plus a single character creator for the trilogy and a photo mode. How sweet: the default Shepard from Mass Effect 3 now applies across all three games. The first Mass Effect got the most love, with steadier aiming, a dedicated melee button, less frustrating bosses and a faster Mako vehicle.
Not everything was cuteness, though. As Eurogamer showed, the game’s listing included German, Spanish, French, Italian, Polish and Russian, but no Portuguese. The sadness was greater because Mass Effect: Andromeda had come out with Brazilian Portuguese. Also left out were Mass Effect 3’s multiplayer mode and the Pinnacle Station DLC, whose source code was corrupted.
What came next
The collection came out on May 14, 2021 and was very well received: on OpenCritic, 96% of 122 reviews recommended the game, and the Xbox One version received universal acclaim on Metacritic.
