Get ready, there’s an indie showcase on Switch: Nintendo of America announced that a new Indie World, the presentation dedicated to independent games, would air on Wednesday, April 14, 2021, at 9 a.m. Pacific time, 1 p.m. in Brasília. The promise was about 20 minutes focused on new indie games coming to Nintendo Switch.
For those unfamiliar, Indie World is the format Nintendo has used since 2019 to give smaller studios a stage, in the same style as the Nintendo Directs: a short video, lots of trailers, release dates and, once in a while, a game that is available on the eShop as soon as the broadcast ends. Back then, the Switch was home to many independent hits, and the presentations became a fixed appointment for those who like discovering games outside the circuit of big releases.
What came next
The broadcast took place on the scheduled date and came out swinging. The highlight was the announcement of OlliOlli World, a new skateboarding game in the OlliOlli series. Binary Haze Interactive showed a trailer confirming the full version of Ender Lilies: Quietus of the Knights, a dark fantasy metroidvania that had come from early access on PC. KeyWe, the puzzle game with two kiwi bird mail carriers, which came out on August 31, and Weaving Tides, a puzzle adventure where you fly on a dragon and stitch the scenery with its tail, released on May 27, also showed up. Road 96, a road game with procedural stories, got a teaser.
And there was a surprise launch: There Is No Game: Wrong Dimension, an adventure full of metahumor, was revealed for Switch and released the same day, right after Indie World. For those tuned in to the broadcast, all it took was opening the eShop and downloading. The event’s tally: new game announced, date confirmed and a shadow-drop launch, just the way people like it.
