Listen up, MOBA crowd: in early August 2021, Hi-Rez Studios revealed the new playable goddess of SMITE. It is Charybdis, presented as “The Ceaseless Whirlpool”, who arrived to shake up the game’s lanes.
In Greek mythology, Charybdis is the sea monster that forms a whirlpool capable of swallowing ships, in the strait opposite Scylla. In SMITE, the story follows that line: she was a daughter of Poseidon and helped her father in his eternal feud with his brother, Zeus, using her control of the waters to flood lands near the sea, including those of the king of Olympus. Zeus did not forgive: he captured the goddess, turned her into her monstrous form and chained her to the bottom of the strait. Now the chains have broken, and Charybdis has arrived in force, seeking vengeance against the gods.
In the game, she is from the Greek pantheon and falls into the Hunter class, with ranged physical attacks and high attack speed. The main mechanic is Tide: she gains Tide by attacking enemies and uses that power to crush opponents with The Maw, the nightmare she controls. She can also vanish into whirlpools, which makes damage trades very unpredictable. For trivia fans: according to the game’s wiki, she was the first official daughter of Poseidon playable in SMITE, and her voice is by Xanthe Huynh.
For those who do not know it, SMITE is a free-to-play third-person MOBA, launched in 2014, in which each player controls a god or mythological figure from pantheons such as the Greek, Norse, Egyptian and Chinese. The game had already attracted 40 million players by 2020 and has a strong esports scene, with the Smite World Championship.
