On September 2, 2022, Bandai Namco released JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: All-Star Battle R, an updated version of the fighting game that originally came out for PS3 in Japan in 2013. It is developed by CyberConnect2, the same studio behind the Naruto Storm games, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot and Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba.
The launch trailer can be watched below:
The R was made to celebrate the 35th anniversary of Hirohiko Araki’s manga and the 10th of the anime. It was announced in March 2022 during a State of Play, and arrived on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam. Before that, an early-access demo was available on PlayStation in June.
The initial roster has 51 characters, ten more than the original, most of them from another CyberConnect2 game, Eyes of Heaven, covering all parts of the story. The characters from the first six parts got new recordings with the anime voices, and the battle system received tweaks and new mechanics.
For fighting game players, the interesting part is in the styles. Some newcomers have unique mechanics: Speedwagon calls allies from Ogre Street for ranged attacks that fit into combos, and Prosciutto alternates between two-man strikes with his partner Pesci and direct attacks from the Stand Grateful Dead. It is the kind of detail that calls for calm practice in practice mode.

What came next
After launch came two season passes with seven paid characters, among them Risotto Nero, Rudol von Stroheim, Leone Abbacchio and the Stand Wonder of U, from JoJolion. On December 1, 2022, alongside the end of the Stone Ocean anime, Weather Report and Enrico Pucci (Final) arrived for free. On Metacritic, the Xbox Series X version had generally favorable reviews and the others landed in the mixed range. The game was nominated for Best Fighting Game at The Game Awards 2022 and the D.I.C.E. Awards, but lost both to MultiVersus.
