On July 17, 2019, Capcom announced via the series’ official profile that Monster Hunter: World had reached 13 million units shipped worldwide, counting physical copies sent to stores and digital sales. It was one more step for a game that already comfortably held the title of the company’s biggest hit ever.

To celebrate, Capcom prepared a gift for the community: all hunters who logged in between July 25 and August 29, 2019 would receive, along with the daily bonus, a special pack of items useful for hunts.

It’s worth taking a calm look at the road up to that point. Monster Hunter: World was announced at E3 2017 and arrived on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on January 26, 2018, with the PC version in August of the same year. The debut was strong: more than five million copies in three days, the series’ biggest mark up to then. In August 2018, the game passed 10 million, and in the fiscal year ending March 2019 it had already surpassed 12 million, becoming Capcom’s best-selling game. The decision to make a more global Monster Hunter paid off: for the first time, sales outside Japan surpassed those inside the country.

What came next

The big Iceborne expansion arrived on consoles in September 2019 and on PC in January 2020, and kept the game selling. Right after the expansion’s PC version, Capcom reported that World had passed 15 million units. The pace continued in the following years: by June 2026, Monster Hunter: World totaled more than 30 million copies shipped, still the best-selling game in Capcom’s history. The series went on with Monster Hunter Rise, released on Nintendo Switch in March 2021.
