On December 1, 2020, Microsoft announced that DOOM Eternal would join Xbox Game Pass for PC on Thursday, December 3. id Software’s game had been part of the Game Pass catalog on consoles since October, but the PC version of the service had been left out until then. Game Pass Ultimate subscribers, which includes PC, also gained access.
The announcement came with new content. The Master Level Super Gore Nest became available the same day. Like the previous ones, it takes a campaign level and rebuilds it, with tougher enemies and reorganized combat. The novelty was Classic Mode: the player starts with only the Combat Shotgun and has to recover weapons and mods within the level itself, like in the days of the 1993 DOOM. Whoever finishes in that mode gets the Classic Green Slayer skin, and the level’s top prize is the golden Combat Shotgun skin.
DOOM Eternal had launched on March 20, 2020 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC and Stadia. The first part of the extra campaign The Ancient Gods arrived on October 20, 2020. In the same week as the announcement, Bethesda also confirmed the Nintendo Switch version, made by Panic Button, for December 8, 2020.
There is a particular calm in watching such a frenetic game gain space in yet another place. For those who had not played it yet, Game Pass was the simplest way in.
What came next
DOOM Eternal received five nominations at The Game Awards 2020, including Game of the Year. The second part of The Ancient Gods came out on March 18, 2021, and the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions arrived on June 29, 2021, with higher frame rates and ray tracing. In March 2021, Microsoft completed the purchase of ZeniMax Media, owner of Bethesda and id Software. The Slayer’s story continued in DOOM: The Dark Ages, from 2025.
