If you remember the year-end magazines with the best-seller ranking on the last page, you’ll like this one. At the end of December 2020, Valve published Best of Steam 2020, its retrospective of the games that stood out on the store during the year, split into categories such as best sellers, new releases, most played, virtual reality and games with controller support.

One important detail: the “best sellers” ranking measures neither profit nor number of copies. Valve ranks the year’s top 100 games by gross revenue and divides them into tiers: Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze.

In the Platinum tier, the highest, there were twelve games: Cyberpunk 2077, Monster Hunter: World, Grand Theft Auto V, Red Dead Redemption 2, Among Us, Dota 2, DOOM Eternal, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Rainbow Six Siege, Destiny 2, Fall Guys and PUBG: Battlegrounds. It’s a nice mix of the year’s releases, such as Cyberpunk, DOOM Eternal and Fall Guys, with veterans that have been on the list for years.

Among the 2020 releases with the highest revenue, Valve highlighted names such as Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, Microsoft Flight Simulator, Crusader Kings III, Resident Evil 3, Half-Life: Alyx, Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord, Persona 4 Golden and Baldur’s Gate 3, which was in early access.

On the most-played list, the criterion is peak concurrent players. The group with more than 200 thousand simultaneous players included, among others, Terraria, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, PUBG, Dota 2, GTA V, Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord, Destiny 2, Among Us, Cyberpunk 2077 and Monster Hunter: World.

The full list is still available on the Best of Steam 2020 page.
