In the days of the video rental store, a game from one generation stayed in that generation. Today, with backward compatibility, a title can get a new lease on life on the next console, and that is what happened with Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. On January 12, 2021, Respawn Entertainment and Electronic Arts released a free update that improved the game’s frame rate and resolution when run through backward compatibility on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
What changed on each console
Xbox Series S
- Frame rate increased to 60 fps (previously 45 fps).
Xbox Series X
- Performance mode: 60 fps, with dynamic resolution between 1080p and 1440p.
- Normal mode: 4K post-processing and dynamic resolution between 1512p and 2160p.
PlayStation 5
- Frame rate increased to 60 fps (previously 45 fps).
- 1440p post-processing.
- Dynamic resolution turned off: the game now runs at a fixed 1200p, versus 810p to 1080p before.
The game
Released in November 2019 for PS4, Xbox One and PC, Fallen Order is a third-person action-adventure from Respawn, the studio behind Titanfall and Apex Legends, directed by Stig Asmussen, who had previously directed God of War III. The story takes place five years after Order 66 and the Jedi purge. The player controls Cal Kestis, a former padawan hiding on the planet Bracca, who works dismantling Clone Wars ships and becomes hunted by the Empire’s Inquisitors while trying to complete his training. Cameron Monaghan plays Cal, and Debra Wilson plays mentor Cere Junda. The game sold more than 10 million units by 2020.
What came next
The January patch was only the beginning. On June 11, 2021, native PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions arrived, free for those who owned the game on PS4 or Xbox One, with more stability, higher resolutions and much faster loading. The sequel, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, came out in April 2023.
