Some context: Cyberpunk 2077 came out in December 2020 full of bugs, mainly on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The fallout was so big that Sony offered refunds and pulled the game from the PlayStation Store indefinitely. It only returned to the store in June 2021, and still with a warning that players kept facing performance problems on the original PS4.

It was in this climate that Adam Kiciński, CEO of CD Projekt, spoke about the game at the WSE Innovation Day conference, on June 28, 2021. According to him, performance had reached a “satisfactory” level, and the team could look at other fronts. In his words:

“We have also been working to improve overall quality, which also makes us very happy. Of course, we are also removing bugs and visual glitches and will continue to do so. Over time, we will also introduce improvements to the general gameplay systems that players have highlighted.”

At the time, around 600 people were still working on the game. Native PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions were planned for the second half of 2021, and free DLCs were planned, but with no updated schedule.

What came next

The turnaround took a while, but it came. The next-generation versions were delayed in October 2021 and arrived on February 15, 2022, free for those who owned the game on PS4 or Xbox One. In September 2022, Netflix’s anime Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, together with new updates, brought the number of PC players back to launch levels. In September 2023 the Phantom Liberty expansion, with Idris Elba, was released, alongside update 2.0, which overhauled core systems of the RPG and was well received. The game, which had passed 13 million units in December 2020, reached 30 million in November 2024. For those who dropped the game at launch, the reassessment was real: CD Projekt Red delivered on what the CEO promised that June, even if it took longer than many people expected.
