After weeks of rumors, Square Enix confirmed in early August 2022 the return of Tactics Ogre with Tactics Ogre: Reborn. The company did not call the game a simple remake: it was presented as a reimagining of Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together, released in 2010 for PSP.
And the PSP’s Let Us Cling Together was itself already a remake of the 1995 Tactics Ogre, released on the Super Famicom, the Japanese Super Nintendo, as the second game in the Ogre Battle series. That is almost three decades of one of the most respected tactical RPGs in the genre.
The announced novelties: high-definition graphics, a re-recorded orchestral soundtrack, a revised battle system and full voice acting in English and Japanese. The story remains the same: Denam Pavel, a young rebel, in the middle of the civil war among the peoples of the island of Valeria.
The launch was set for November 11, 2022, on PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam. An Xbox version was not announced.
The PSP version was directed by Hiroshi Minagawa and brought back a good part of the original team, including writer and designer Yasumi Matsuno and composers Hitoshi Sakimoto and Masaharu Iwata, with Akihiko Yoshida supervising the art direction. It brought equipment creation and the ability to go back to story decision points, and sold more than 176,000 units in its first week in Japan.
What came next
Tactics Ogre: Reborn came out on the planned date, November 11, 2022, and was the best-selling physical game of its debut week in Japan: 57,256 copies, adding Switch (36,783), PS4 (12,668) and PS5 (7,805).
