On September 12, 2022, Sony and Nintendo announced, practically together, new editions of their presentations for the next day, September 13, at different times.

The Nintendo Direct would run about 40 minutes, focused on Nintendo Switch games due in late 2022.

The State of Play was set for 7 p.m. Brasília time, with roughly 20 minutes of announcements, news and gameplay of ten upcoming releases for PS5, PS4 and PS VR2, streamed on PlayStation’s Twitch and YouTube channels. With Tokyo Game Show approaching, Sony promised big news from Japanese partners and also a few surprises from studios in other parts of the world.

What came next

The day was busy. At the State of Play, Tekken 8 was officially announced, and Team Ninja revealed Rise of the Ronin, published by Sony on PS5. For fighting game fans, Tekken 8 was the big moment of the day: the first mainline game in the series to debut straight on consoles rather than in arcades. It came out on January 26, 2024 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.

At the Direct, Nintendo gave a name and date to the Breath of the Wild sequel: The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, set for May 12, 2023, a date that was met. Shigeru Miyamoto presented Pikmin 4, which came out in July 2023, and Fire Emblem Engage and Theatrhythm Final Bar Line were also announced, both released in 2023. Bayonetta 3 got a new trailer there, a little over a month before launch.
