On November 8, 2022, Nintendo released its results for the quarter ended September 30 and updated the sales figures for its consoles and games. The Nintendo Switch totaled 114.33 million units sold worldwide, and console software reached 917.59 million units.

The game numbers: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe led with 48.41 million units, followed by Animal Crossing: New Horizons with 40.17 million, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate with 29.53 million. Right behind came The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (27.79 million), Pokémon Sword and Shield (25.37 million) and Super Mario Odyssey (24.40 million). The totals include digital copies and those bundled with the console.

For comparison, the same data showed the Nintendo 3DS at 75.94 million units and the Wii U at 13.56 million. Launched on March 3, 2017, the Switch had passed, in a little over five and a half years, the Wii’s 101 million mark, a number Nintendo itself used as a reference when it predicted a similar performance for the new console at the start. Not bad for a hybrid device that works on the TV and as a handheld.

What came next

The Switch kept selling for years. In July 2024, it became Nintendo’s longest-running console on the market without a successor, surpassing the NES’s seven years. The Nintendo Switch 2, compatible with most of its predecessor’s games, arrived on June 5, 2025, and by December 2025 the original Switch had passed 155 million units, Nintendo’s best-selling console ever and the second of all time, behind only the PlayStation 2.
