Check out this great one: between November 2 and 18, 2018, anyone could claim Destiny 2 for free on PC, through Battle.net, Blizzard’s app. And it was not a free weekend or a demo: anyone who grabbed the game within the deadline kept it in their library forever.
The promotion was announced on the eve of the BlizzCon 2018 opening ceremony and marked Destiny 2’s first anniversary on Battle.net, where the PC version had debuted in October 2017. Those who already owned the game on PC also got a treat: an exclusive emblem, released in December. Important: the free offer was the base game; the expansions were still paid separately.
There was more. Bungie opened Gambit to everyone, on PC, PS4 and Xbox One, in a trial weekend between November 9 and 11. Gambit is the mode that mixes PvE and PvP: two teams of four face computer-controlled enemies and can invade the rival side to disrupt them. It arrived with the Forsaken expansion, released in September 2018, and was the kind of thing that made you want to buy the expansion after trying it.
For anyone who likes FPS games with an RPG feel and had never given Bungie’s game a chance, there was no excuse: all it took was creating a Battle.net account and clicking to claim.
What came next
Less than a year later, Destiny 2 changed homes. In January 2019, Bungie and Activision ended their publishing partnership, and on October 1, 2019, alongside the Shadowkeep expansion, the game left Battle.net and went on sale on Steam on PC. On the same day, it went free-to-play with the Destiny 2: New Light version. Shadowkeep also brought cross-save, which lets players carry characters between platforms.
