Anyone who lived through the days of tapes borrowed from the rental store knows the value of a weekend to try a game without paying. In January 2019, Activision did something similar with Blackout, the battle royale mode of Call of Duty: Black Ops 4: from January 17 to 24, the mode was unlocked for free on all platforms, even for those who did not own the game.

The trial required disk space. At the time, the download took up about 64.18 GB on Xbox One, 42.3 GB on PS4 and 86 GB on PC, through Battle.net.

For those who just arrived, a bit of context. Black Ops 4 came out on October 12, 2018 and was the first mainline Call of Duty without a single-player campaign; the story mode, which would have been called Career, was scrapped in early 2018. In its place, Treyarch bet on Blackout, which put up to 100 players, solo, in duos or in squads, on the biggest map ever made for the series until then. The map had vehicles such as quad bikes and helicopters and even computer-controlled zombies at themed locations.

The series, which debuted in 2003, was reaching more than fifteen years of history and, with Blackout, entered battle royale for the first time. The free week worked like the old demo tape: a sample to convince those still on the fence to buy the full game, with the traditional multiplayer and the Zombies mode.

What came next

Blackout later got a smaller map, Alcatraz, for 40 players, with respawns and no vehicles, plus special modes such as Close Quarters and Fast Collapse. On March 10, 2020, Activision released Call of Duty: Warzone, a free-to-play standalone battle royale, and on November 16, 2022 its successor arrived, initially called Warzone 2.0.
