In early August 2022, Nintendo released its first-quarter results for the fiscal year, and the Nintendo Switch reached 111.08 million units shipped worldwide as of June 30, 2022. On the software side, the total was already 863.59 million games.

By Nintendo’s own data, the breakdown was: 84.77 million for the original Switch, 18.99 million for the Switch Lite and 7.32 million for the Switch OLED, the newest model.

In the April to June quarter, the console sold 3.43 million units, a lower number than in the same period of the previous year. This was not unique to Nintendo: manufacturers were coming off records during the COVID-19 pandemic, and in 2022 console and game numbers were starting to return to a more normal level.

Among the games, one highlight was Kirby and the Forgotten Land, released in March 2022. As of June 30, the pink puffball’s new adventure had already sold 4.53 million copies. At the top of the Switch list remained Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, with 46.82 million, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, with 39.38 million, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, with 28.82 million.

What came next

The Switch kept selling for a few more years and passed 155 million units shipped by December 2025, becoming Nintendo’s best-selling console ever and the second best-selling of all time, behind only the PlayStation 2. Its successor, the Nintendo Switch 2, was released on June 5, 2025. Kirby and the Forgotten Land also kept growing and, with 7.52 million copies as of March 2024, became the best-selling game in the Kirby series.
