Anyone who spent afternoons at a LAN house building armies in a real-time strategy game will pay attention to this one: Destructive Creations, the Polish studio best known for the controversial Hatred, announced Ancestors Legacy, an RTS with medieval battles, initially for Xbox One and PC.

The change of tone is big. If Hatred drew attention for its violence, the new project bets on story and tactics. For publishing, the studio teamed up with 1C Company, a publisher that spent years releasing PC games, such as the IL-2 Sturmovik flight simulation series.

Here is the trailer:

The information released at the time:

  • Four playable nations, in an extensive campaign inspired by historical events.
  • Advanced tactical options, combining use of terrain, troop experience and morale.
  • Battles with cinematic presentation.
  • Polished visuals, with Unreal Engine 4.
  • Intense multiplayer battles.

What came next

Ancestors Legacy came out for Windows on May 22, 2018. The four confirmed nations were Vikings, Anglo-Saxons, Teutons and Slavs, and the Saladin’s Conquest expansion later added the Saracens as a fifth faction. The Viking campaign begins with the raid on the Lindisfarne monastery in 793, considered the starting point of the Viking Age, and the Anglo-Saxon one features figures such as Edward the Confessor and William the Conqueror. The game also has a day and night cycle that changes how each faction plays, and multiplayer offers Domination and Annihilation modes on 15 maps, for 2 to 6 players.

Reception was good: a 77 average on Metacritic, and IGN described it as a traditional RTS with some historical liberties. The console version took longer than planned and reached PS4 and Xbox One on August 13, 2019, followed by Nintendo Switch on June 11, 2020 and macOS in 2026. Back in the rental-store days, console strategy was a rarity; today you can command Vikings from the couch.
