Every new generation of a fighting game begins with a first contact, and Mortal Kombat 11’s happened on January 17, 2019. That day, NetherRealm Studios held a reveal event for the community, simultaneously in Los Angeles and London, and published two trailers: one focused on gameplay and another dedicated to fatalities. The game had been announced at The Game Awards in December 2018.

Fatalities:
Calmly, in the gameplay video you can see the ideas that would change the pace of matches. The Fatal Blow is a special move unlocked when health drops below 30%, a chance for a comeback for whoever is behind on the scoreboard. Krushing Blows are critical hits that show internal injuries when certain conditions are met. There is also the Flawless Block, which rewards defense at the exact moment, and a custom variations system, similar to Injustice 2’s, that separates the fighter’s appearance from their abilities.
Mortal Kombat 11 was set for April 23, 2019, on Xbox One, PC, PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch.
What came next
The game came out on the scheduled date (the Switch version reached Europe on May 10), with 25 fighters in the base game and 12 more through DLC, including guests such as Spawn, the Terminator, the Joker and RoboCop. The Aftermath expansion arrived in May 2020 with more story and three characters, and Mortal Kombat 11: Ultimate brought everything together in November 2020. Critics praised the gameplay, story and netcode, but criticized the microtransactions. By 2022 it had sold more than 15 million copies, the series’ biggest success, and the game won best fighting game at The Game Awards 2020.
