In fighting, whoever has patience reaps the whole combo. Capcom waited more than ten years to continue the main Devil May Cry line and, in March 2019, it reaped: the company announced that Devil May Cry 5 had passed 2 million copies since its March 8 launch, a mark reached in about two weeks. The game was available on PS4, Xbox One and PC.
For those arriving now, DMC 5 is the direct continuation of the main series, directed by Hideaki Itsuno, a name tied to the franchise for many years. The game puts the player in control of three characters with very different styles: Nero, with the mechanical arm; Dante, the series’ classic demon hunter; and V, a new character who fights through summoned creatures. Each one demands its own way of thinking about combat, and that is where the fun lies for those who like style and long combos.
Critics received it well: Metacritic scores ranged from 87 to 89, with highlights precisely on the three playable characters and the variety of combat. One review even called it one of the best games about hitting demons ever made.
What came next
DMC 5 won the Best Action Game award at The Game Awards 2019 and received the Japan Game Awards award for excellence. In November 2020, the Special Edition came to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S at the consoles’ launch, with Vergil playable and support for up to 120 frames per second. By June 2026, sales totaled 14.24 million units, the franchise’s best result, and a Nintendo Switch 2 version, the Devil Hunter Edition, came out on June 23, 2026 with the extra content already released. Breathe, watch your opponent and keep practicing: style never goes out of fashion.
