Anyone who grew up renting Silent Hill from the video store knows what a fixed-camera psychological horror game with an Akira Yamaoka soundtrack means. That was the mood Bloober Team, of Layers of Fear and Observer, promised with The Medium, set for January 28, 2021 on Xbox Series X|S and PC. A week earlier, on January 19, the Polish studio published the updated requirements table for the PC version.
The table had seven tiers, all targeting 30 frames per second, with 64-bit Windows 10:
- Minimum (1080p, low preset, DX11): GTX 1650 Super or GTX 1060, AMD R9 390X, Core i5-6600 or Ryzen 5, 8 GB of RAM.
- Recommended (1080p, medium preset): GTX 1660 Super or RX 5600 XT, Core i5-9600 or Ryzen 7 3700X, 16 GB of RAM and SSD.
- High (1440p): RTX 2060 Super or RX 5700 XT.
- Ultra (2160p): RTX 2080 or RTX 3060 Ti, RX 6800, Core i7-9700.
- RT Minimum (1080p with ray tracing, DX12): RTX 2060 Super or RX 6800.
- RT Recommended (1440p): RTX 3060 Ti or RTX 2080, RX 6800.
- RT High (2160p): RTX 3080 or RX 6800 XT, Core i7-9700.
Across all tiers, the game asked for 50 GB of storage. The numbers were steep for the time, and there was a reason: The Medium shows two worlds at once, the real and the spirit one, with the screen split in several moments. The idea was born in 2012, conceived for Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii U, but rendering two simultaneous views was too heavy for that generation, and the project sat in a drawer until the arrival of the Xbox Series X|S.
The protagonist is Marianne, a medium who crosses into the spirit plane, senses objects behind walls and relives past events through echoes. Check out the trailer:
